IGNITION - GM HEI

This is another modification/upgrade that has been covered in very good detail in other places (slantsix.org has a good write-up here: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15779 ). There areseveral key reasons for doing this modification.

First, if your Slant-6 is still running points and condenser ignition, then electronic ignition or pretty much any kind is a big upgrade. Just from a maintenance standpoint, electronic ignition eliminates the points and condenser so you are not having to adjust/replace these parts. Electronic ignition systems also generate a hotter spark. This means more complete combustion and better engine performance.

But what if your car already has Chrysler MOPAR electronic ignition? My car does because a previous owner did this retrofit. Why then would HEI be considered an upgrade? Because HEI is more efficient, creates an even hotter spark than MOPAR electronic ignition and allows you to delete the ballast resistor.

All of this is covered in much better detail in the SlantSix.org article so I encourage you to read that for more information.

The purpose of my write-up is to showcase my installation of GM HEI. Most people who have done this modification and posted about it online have just bolted the HEI module and coil to a fender or another convenient flat surface. I don't really like this as it seems kludgey. I wanted my installation to be stealthier, so I borrowed an idea I saw on a forum and decided to hide the HEI module inside a gutted MOPAR ignition module box. This write-up is how I accomplished this.
